What is RSS?
RSS was originally developed by Netscape as a tool for building portals of headlines and links to mainstream news sites. (See our encyclopedia entry on RSS) Now, anyone can use RSS to monitor their favorite websites in one interface.
RSS AggregatorsIn order to use RSS, you need a piece of software called a "news aggregator". Some aggregators work as software you run on your computer. Others are web-based and permit readers to access their feeds from anywhere. In either case, you'll need to provide the software with the URLs of the feeds you wish to follow (ours are listed to the left). Thereafter, the aggregator will keep track of your feeds, and you'll know whenever new articles are published. Some popular web-based readers include
Bloglines,
Newsgator, and
My Yahoo, though there are many others.
More Feeds and InformationThis Networkcomputing page provides more information on obtaining and using news aggregators.
