Netmagic Targets Tape Backup Market with Cloud-based Petavault
Targeting enterprises which are looking at replacing their tape-based backup systems, Netmagic has launched a pay-per-use electronic data vault service By Srikanth RP, NC, October 15, 2009
For backups, CIOs traditionally preferred tapes—as they are among the most inexpensive backup options. However, this advantage of cost is offset by issues of manageability, as tapes have to be manually loaded and tracked. Tapes have also been proven to be unreliable for storage as they have high failure rates—specifically when it comes to restoration of data.

Kajwadkar - Netmagic“Restoring data from a tape-based system is time consuming as tapes have to be manually tracked and loaded. Additionally, tape-based systems are unreliable, as they have a failure rate ranging between 30 to 40 percent,” explains C Kajwadkar, Chief Architect and VP – Availability Services, Netmagic.

However, at the core of every problem lies a hidden opportunity waiting to be unveiled and utilized. Netmagic sought to take advantage of such an opportunity with its Petavault service.

Petavault is a completely automated electronic data vault service that compresses, deduplicates, encrypts and backs up enterprise data. As data is stored electronically and is encrypted, there are no problems of data loss as data is transferred through a secure line as opposed to being physically shipped through vehicles. This also satisfies current electronic data compliance norms that require organizations in certain industries such as Insurance to maintain their electronic documents for as long as 15 to 20 years.

Available via a pay-per-use model, this service hopes to address the concerns of enterprises facing issues related to quick and efficient data restoration from traditional systems. “By using Petavault, enterprises can benefit immensely from the best practices that we have learnt over the years. For example, using technologies such as deduplication and compression, enterprises will be able to significantly cut down on their storage requirements needs,” says Sharad Sanghi, MD and CEO, Netmagic.

Kajwadkar says that the service has found huge demand from enterprises—specifically in the financial services space. Among the list of customers who have already tried out the service include names such as NCDEX, India Infoline and Motilal Oswal.
