Of late, everyone has been talking about data explosion
globally. Could you elaborate on this and the related
issues?
If one looks at data explosion in the last five years, the
amount of data has grown ten fold. Not only has the amount of data
being created grown, but also the amount of data being stored for
backup and other requirements has increased the need for data
storage. For every gigabyte of data growth, the amount of storage
required is anywhere between two to six times this data growth.
Today, requirements such as compliance require determining how much
data needs to be stored and for how long it needs to be stored.
How do large enterprises and SMBs differ in terms of
dealing with this data explosion?
Although around 75 percent of data is created by individuals, 85
percent of this data is dealt with by large companies for issues
such as security, privacy, and reliability. They deal with a huge
amount of internal data via IT groups. These groups know how to
store, virtualize, manage and backup data.
SMBs, on the other hand, belong to lower commercial segments.
Though they also have to deal with data growth, the scale of this
growth is not that high when compared to large enterprises. Also
they cannot have sufficient IT expertise to deal with data-related
issues such as storing, managing and backing up their data.
