With most security vendors concentrating on large enterprises for
selling Data Loss Prevention (DLP) solutions, Cyberoam, a vendor
known for its Unified Threat Management devices (UTM), is eyeing
the relatively unaddressed market for SMEs.
Cyberoam recently launched an end point data protection solution
that gives organizations protection with policy-driven data and
asset management over the end point. The company believes that the
need for end point DLP solutions is huge—specifically among
SMEs—given the rise in mobility and since more enterprises
face security risks from USB-powered devices.

Says Hemal Patel, CEO,
Cyberoam, “Most products in the DLP space are too complex for
SMEs. With USB drives becoming ubiquitous, SMEs too face the same
risks of intellectual property theft as large enterprises. We are
aiming to sell close to 1 lakh licenses by the end of 2010.”
Besides targeting individual firms, the company hopes to ride on
the huge existing base of UTM appliances that the firm has in the
country.
Useful features that may appeal to CIOs include:
Blocking of file transfers by filenames or extensions, via
removable devices and media such as chat, e-mail or file-sharing
applications
To track suspicious file transfers, one can enable a policy that
enables creating shadow copies of files that are created, modified
or transferred
The solution also has a feature for encrypting information residing
on USB drives or laptops. This will help enterprises to prevent
data misuse in case a laptop or USB drive is lost or stolen
One can also set a policy that specifies read-only access to
devices such as cameras or phones
The market potential for the solution is huge, as India’s
small and medium enterprise segment comprises over 60 lakh (6
million) Indian enterprises. These companies contribute close to 42
percent of India’s total exports. By creating a product
specifically targeted at SMEs, Cyberoam has the opportunity to take
a leadership role in the relatively uncontested space for DLP
solutions for small enterprises.
