DoT Lays Down WiFi Compliance Requirements for ISPs
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced new compliance requirements for ISPs providing WiFi services at public hotspots such as airports, malls, etc NC News Network, September 04, 2009

With WiFi being increasingly deployed in homes, corporations and public locations, security needs to be geared to ensure safe Internet access. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced new compliance requirements for all ISPs providing WiFi services at public hotspots including airports, malls, schools, etc.

ISPs will need to comply with the following requirements with immediate effect for new and existing subscribers/resellers:

  • Each subscriber (office or residential) must be able to access WiFi services through a unique login ID and password that will be authenticated at the centralized server deployed by the ISP.
  • All public hotspot subscribers must be given temporary login IDs and passwords to access the WiFi service.
  • ISPs must inform existing subscribers and subscribers with personal WiFi routers to register for secure and encrypted WiFi service within four months or face suspension of service.
  • ISPs, upon lawful request, are required to enable interception and tracking capabilities so that agencies can track unlawful activities.

Nikhil Jain, COO & Director, Elitecore Technologies, said, “These guidelines issued by the DoT will definitely secure the network and stop unlawful use by anti-social elements. We are working on various cases related to WiFi security by offering a centralized authentication server and other security features that are needed to protect the WiFi networks.” The company has a solution that helps ISPs to centralize authentication for their subscribers.
