India PC sales show year-on-year growth of 34 percent
Sales touch 23.7 lakh units in the April to June 2010 quarter, according to IDC India InformationWeek News Network, August 18, 2010
According to IDC, the overall India PC market sales touched 23.7 lakh units during the April-June 2010 quarter recording a 34 percent year-on-year (2Q 2010 over 2Q 2009) and a 5.8 percent quarter-on-quarter (2Q 2010 over 1Q 2010) increase.

Desktop PC sales accounted for nearly two-thirds of total PC sales at 15.6 lakh units, representing a 24% increase year-on-year (2Q 2010 over 2Q 2009). The sales of Notebook computers grew at 61% year-on-year (2Q 2010 over 2Q 2009), recording 8.05 lakh shipments.

In the overall PC (notebooks and desktops combined) market, Dell emerged as the market leader for the first time with a share of 15.2 percent, while HP (14.3 percent) and Acer (11.5 percent) took the second and third spots, respectively.

In terms of desktop PC shipments HP retained its top position with a market share of 10.2 percent, followed by HCL and Acer in second and third spots, respectively during 2Q 2010. In terms of notebook PC shipments, Dell reclaimed the top spot with a market share of 29.2 percent in 2Q 2010; HP slipped back to second position, while Acer was ranked at Number three.

"The April-June quarter traditionally shows a small sequential dip in PC sales. The sequential growth of 6 percent in overall India PC shipments in 2Q 2010 points to the continuing economic revival," stated Anirban Banerjee, Associate Vice President, Research, IDC India.

"An exciting product portfolio, strong channel support and an effective after sales service network are becoming increasingly important to sustain growth in this competitive market", stated Sumanta Mukherjee, Lead PC Analyst, IDC India.

The India PC market size, growth rates and vendor shares reported by IDC are in terms of “unit shipments”, referred to as ‘sales’ in the press release. As per IDC taxonomy, unit shipments constitute a measure of the number of PCs shipped by a vendor to all distribution channels or directly to end users. Units are counted as they leave the vendor and are not double counted in the case of OEM relationships in which systems are shipped twice.
