Aiming to reduce its carbon footprint while reducing costs,
improving productivity and overall efficiency, Applied Materials
India launched ‘Operation Green.’ The project aimed to
leverage Green IT ideals and principles across the entire stack of
IT Infrastructure right from end user computing to data center
computing, network infrastructure and unified communications.
Operation Green aims to contribute towards realizing the
organization’s global goal of 10,000 tons of carbon footprint
reduction by 2012.
As part of the project, old servers were replaced with new
energy efficient servers at the server end. The company also
deployed VMware’s ESX Cluster along with cluster file
servers, simplified folder structure, and Self Serve Tools. To
reduce carbon footprint associated with travel, the company
deployed audio, web, desktop and video conferencing solutions.
At the end user level, by enabling hibernation modes, the
company, which has around 825 desktops/workstations and 280
laptops, saved $42 a year per desktop/workstation and $4 a year per
laptop. By deploying LCD monitors, the company reduced monitor
power consumption costs to $15 per monitor per year.
The deployment of MFDs allowed the company to achieve savings of
up to 20 percent in terms of paper costs and consumption. While the
deployment of virtual servers has enabled the company to achieve a
50:50 ratio of virtual machines to physical machines, the
introduction of blade servers in the data center has reduced
cabling, energy and power consumption and data center
footprint.
Highlights
* Savings per year of $42 per
desktop/workstation and $4 per laptop with energy saving modes
* 20 percent savings in printing costs with MFD
implementations
* Data center and carbon footprint reduced with
virtualization and blade server adoption
