Explore about how a wireless network helped L&T monitor the status of the construction activity at the Delhi Airport in real time

A wireless umbrella for Delhi airport
Snapshot
Company:
L&T, ECC Division
Project:
Designing and creating a wireless backbone
IT Head / CIO / CTO / Project Lead:
Rajesh Srivastava, Manager, Systems
Having won the Delhi Airport modernization contract, L&T had a challenging task in hand, as the project area was under construction and lacked adequate infrastructure.
The firm had huge data communication requirements, and also needed to ensure electronic security for all 20 site locations within its premises. It wanted to quickly set up a basic foundation in place that would enable smooth data connectivity for design and ERP applications and electronic security for all areas where the construction was in progress. With the area spread over 54 sq.km, it was difficult for senior members to monitor daily activities. Lacking basic infrastructure, the real challenge lay in providing connectivity for data transmission andadequate security to all 20 site locations.
To overcome this issue, L&T partnered with its solution partner, MK Infosystems, which used a combination of wired and wireless technologies such as WiMax to ensure connectivity. While local LAN has been created using the traditional wired infrastructure, the backbone has been created on wireless.
The same wireless network is also used for video surveillance, giving L&T the ability to monitor the status of the construction activity in real time. As the wireless network is connected to the LAN, it gives authorized staff the ability to zoom in on a particular site, without the need to be physically present.
With CCTV on wireless, activity can be monitored in real time by senior staff at the main office. This also helps the senior staff to respond quickly in emergency situations, when immediate decisions need to be taken.
