Vehicle tracking system slashes turnaround time

Snapshot

Project: Vehicle Tracking System
IT Head / CIO / CTO / Project Lead: H Krishnan, Assistant VP(IT)

As a manufacturer, Indian Rayon wanted to automate tracking of vehicles at its factory-based locations, as the existing process was manual, with a lot of inefficiencies built into the system.

Accordingly, the firm developed a web-based vehicle tracking system, designed to capture data right from a vehicle’s entry at the factory gate and monitoring it during weighbridge, loading and unloading operations.

The main goal of the project was to monitor vehicle movement and reduce turnaround time. Post deployment, the solution has succeeded in enabling better coordination between various departments in the logistics department such as security, raw material handling, and loading. This has improved the availability and ability to handle more trucks. For example, in 2007the number of trucks handled was 15,791, while in 2008, the number of trucks handled was 38, 860(almost twice the earlier figure).

Statistics show that following the deployment of the project, there has been a significant reduction in the turnaround time and an increase in dispatches.

The project has also intelligently used technology to tackle unique challenges. For example, understanding that most of the security staff at the gate were illiterate, the solution has a list of values in drop down boxes for all key fields. This has helped in significantly cutting down data-entry errors.

The firm estimates that the solution has helped in saving close to Rs 100 crore during fiscal 2007-2008, due to better tracking of trucks within factory sites.

Highlights
  • Nearly Rs 100 crore have been saved in the cement business during 2007-2008 due to better tracking of trucks within factory sites
  • The project has improved the availability and ability to handle more trucks. Using the same manpower, the firm has been able to handle twice the number of trucks in the year 2008, as compared to 2007
