Company: Blue Dart
Project: Providing a near real-time update for
consignments
IT Head / CIO / CTO / Project Lead: Daniel
Matthews, Senior Manager-Systems
Blue Dart needed a solution to track and capture activities while
the courier was on the move as it handled a number of expensive and
sensitive documents and parcels. This was extremely important as
customers required access to delivery information as soon as
possible, more so when they encountered an exception while making a
delivery attempt.
Typically, once a consignment is delivered, information is passed
by the courier delivery person on phone to his associated office at
intervals of two hours. This information, in turn, gets
disseminated to internal users as well as users on the
company’s website, within an average timeframe of 10
minutes.
There is also the possibility of
manual errors creeping in, since one person conveys information
over the phone, and the person at the other end punches in this
data into the system. To address this issue, Blue Dart developed a
mobile-based solution that captures information on the field and
provides a near real-time update to
customers.
GPRS technology is used to exchange
and update data from the mobile device to the central server in
real time. Providing reliable and timely information is the key to
success for any business. Due to its mobile solution, the customer
service at Blue Dart is able to estimate the next delivery point
based on the activity on the field. As the digital signature and
photographic evidence of the identity of the consignee is captured
in the system, customers receivecomplete visibility into the
delivery of their shipments.
