As one of the leading IT infrastructure services companies in India, Patni Computer Systems, owns an IT infrastructure which is highly dynamic in nature. Depending upon customer requirements, the company is required to increase its server muscle in its data centers to meet these requirements. However once the business objective is achieved, a large portion of this increasing physical infrastructure ends up as underutilized or unused.

 
Since Patni also provides application development services, the company needed to have different hosting, and development and testing environments. These environments would also vary in terms of their physical infrastructure requirements.
 
“One part of the infrastructure was required for running our internal applications. Another part is used for developing and testing different software for our customers. These applications can have their individual set of resource requirements. Each development project would have us deploying a new set of servers which would then lie unused once the project was complete,” explains Satish Joshi, Executive VP, Patni Computer Systems.
 
“Managing the infrastructure variability and the accumulating idle capacities was a big challenge that led to us looking at virtualizing the infrastructure,” adds Joshi. With VMware being a prominent virtualization vendor in the market and the potential level of support due to its existing relationship with the company, Patni decided to adopt VMware’s virtualization solutions for its servers.
