"Always look for simpler solutions to challenges and be the first to make decision in your area of specialization"
Satish Das, CSO and Director-ERM, Cognizant has seen and well managed a heady mix of challenges and opportunities in his IT career. He believes that security has to be one, which means physical, personal, network, server and client side security needs to be built as a single architecture. He shares a few challenges and trends in the IT space with Megha Banduni Rai. NWC News Network, December 01, 2008

How do you foresee the growth potential in your vertical? What are the areas of growth? What are the top technical challenges you face currently?
Growth potential is good in our vertical. Unified communications, remote working enablement systems, market consolidation and restructuring are throwing up new opportunities worldwide. Virtualization and management of utilities supporting technology and systems are additional factors that are fuelling growth in this vertical. Aligning enterprise systems with the unified communication systems, changing user interface and working style is the topmost challenge. Virtualization aligned with the server side consolidation and business continuity of enterprise systems are a few more.

What are the best IT projects undertaken in Cognizant? How do you evaluate ROI from IT projects?
We have enabled most of the enterprise systems going the self-service way. Pushing business intelligence systems for wider audience and Risk management practices and systems are some of the best IT initiatives.
To check the IT effectiveness, ROI metrics are set at the beginning and tracked all through the life time of the system. ROI is very instrumental in productivity improvement. It should be instrumental in helping business align with customer requirements and in process efficiency improvement.
